IV Iron Therapy delivers iron directly into the bloodstream through an intravenous (IV) line. This method bypasses the digestive system, allowing for faster absorption and replenishment of iron stores—ideal for patients who cannot tolerate or do not respond to oral iron supplements.

Iron is essential for producing healthy red blood cells and preventing or treating iron deficiency anemia. Without enough iron, the body cannot transport oxygen efficiently, leading to fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, and poor concentration. IV iron helps restore energy levels and improve overall quality of life more quickly than oral alternatives.

You may be a candidate if you:

• Oral iron supplements are not effective or cause gastrointestinal side effects
• There is severe iron deficiency or anemia
• Rapid replenishment is needed (e.g., before surgery)
• Ongoing blood loss or chronic illness (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease, heavy menstrual bleeding, chronic kidney disease) prevents iron absorption

 Yes. A referral from a physician, nurse practitioner, or specialist is required to schedule your IV iron infusion.

We offer:

• Monoferric (Iron Derisomaltose) – typically requires one infusion
• Venofer (Iron Sucrose) – usually requires a series of smaller infusions (2–5)​

The infusion fees are:

• Monoferric: $250 per infusion (usually one infusion required)
• Venofer: $165 per infusion (typically 2–5 infusions required)

Note: The iron medication cost is separate and paid to the pharmacy. 

IV iron medications may be covered through PharmaCare Special Authority or your private drug plan. Once we receive your referral we can help you with your application.

What can I expect at the appointment?

• Pre-Treatment (15–30 minutes)
  Your nurse will check your vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse).
• Screening questions will be asked about recent illness, infections, allergies, pregnancy, and recent medications or vaccinations.
• In some cases, you may receive medications to help prevent side effects (e.g. antihistamines).

Treatment (30–90 minutes typical)

• You will be seated comfortably in a private room with access to Wi-Fi and space for your belongings.
• Bring reading material and/or devices (eg. phone, tablet, earphones) to help pass the time.
• Your nurse will monitor you continuously during the infusion.
• If a reaction occurs, the nurse may stop or slow the infusion.

Post-Treatment (30 minutes or more)

• You will be monitored for 30 minutes or more after the infusion to ensure you tolerate the treatment well.

• Many patients begin to feel improvement within 3–4 days.
• Full benefit may take 10–14 days as your body builds up new red blood cells using the replenished iron.

Most patients tolerate IV iron well, but potential side effects include:

• Headache
• Nausea or upset stomach
• Mild rash or flushing
• Muscle or joint aches (flu-like symptoms)
• Darkened urine (temporary)
•  Para-venous leakage - leakage of iron at injection site, potentially leading to long-lasting skin discolouration
• Rare allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) – nurses are trained to manage this immediately as well as the on site physician

If you feel well, you may drive home. However:

• Some patients experience drowsiness, lightheadedness, or fatigue after treatment.
• We recommend arranging alternate transportation, especially for your first infusion or if you have experienced side effects in the past.

The duration of benefit depends on your underlying condition and iron needs:

• If the cause of your iron deficiency is resolved, further infusions may not be needed after iron stores are replenished.
• Some patients with ongoing needs may require periodic re-treatment.
   
  Your referring physician will guide you on long-term management.
